Inputs
Six short tests feed this category. Take them in any order — each one takes under a minute.
What moves it
- Ground-to-standing transitions, trained small and often, rebuild the strength/flexibility/balance combo tested by the Ground and Wall tests.
- Lower-body strength work (squats, step-ups, sit-to-stands) is what the Chair test is actually measuring.
- Walking itself, done regularly at a real pace, is one of the few interventions shown to hold gait speed steady.
- Grip strength responds to simple, direct training — carries, hangs, and basic hand work — at any age.
Solutions, scaled to you
A low score is never a dead end — it just changes where you start. Pick whichever matches what’s actually available to you right now.
On your own
- Practice down-and-up transitions on a carpeted spot, small and often, not one long session.
- Wall sits and chair stands need zero equipment — a wall and a chair is the whole setup.
- Walk a measured stretch a few times a week and track your pace over time.
