The Body Test

Can’t Train Yet? Start Here.

Not every low score has a workout waiting for it. If pain, recovery, or a mobility limit means you can’t train a weak spot directly right now, this is what the research says actually helps in the meantime.

Sauna — the strongest data of the three

A 20+ year Finnish cohort study of 2,300+ men found those using a sauna 4–7 times a week had a 40% lower all-cause mortality rate than once-a-week users, with sharply lower rates of sudden cardiac and cardiovascular death. Sauna use triggers a heart rate increase comparable to low-to-moderate intensity exercise — a genuine passive way to get some of what exercise gives you.

Hot tub / warm water immersion — promising, tested in older adults specifically

A pilot study had adults over 50 do repeated 45-minute hot tub sessions over two weeks and found measurable cardiovascular improvements. Separately, warm water immersion widens blood vessels and produces a heart-rate response similar to light exercise, and buoyancy takes weight off joints that might not tolerate load-bearing exercise right now.

Cold plunge — real, but the thinnest evidence of the three

A systematic review found genuine but modest and short-lived effects on stress, sleep, and quality of life, with the review authors explicitly noting the evidence base is still small and inconsistent. Worth trying if it fits your routine — just don’t expect it to carry the same weight as sauna or hot tub data. Promising, not proven.

None of these replace training a weak spot once you’re able to. They’re a real, evidence-backed way to support your body while you can’t — not a permanent substitute.
